Y oh Y

For the first time since I was a little kid I'm going to the YMCA again.

We started going steadily to the old Shades Valley YMCA when I was about four years old for swimming lessons. I absolutely detested swimming lessons (I'm still trying to figure out a critical situation where diving would actually come in handy; my instructors never did answer that question to my satisfaction.) But ironically, I LOVED going up to swim in the outdoor pool once swimming lessons were over. Once I got to my pre-teen years (beyond the phase where swimming IS entertainment) we stopped going. In college I began working out at the gym regularly, but since there were so many gyms on Alabama's campus that I could use for free there was no need to go to the Y. And once I got out into the 'real world' I simply bought my own exercise equipment.

But in another sign that life has come full circle we've now decided to join the Y again so that Laney can start to get acclimated to the water. We're going to give toddler swimming lessons a go again (even though Laney hated them when we first tried it.) Just like her dad, while she hates swimming lessons, she seems to love being in the pool once lessons are over.

It feels good to be going again and the Shelby County branch here in Pelham has some excellent facilities. It's also nice to have access to a wide range of gym equipment again. I still like the convenience of working out at home, but it's also nice to go to a gym every now and then and be 'out doing something.' I might also start going to my old stomping grounds at the Shades Valley Y again on my lunch breaks because it's so close to the office.
